The Other Side of War
In 2002, I was living in Iraq on the eve of a war we all knew was inevitable. What struck me most thenand still does todaywas the determination with which people held on to life. Despite the fear, they kept working, walking the streets, or gathering in cafés to support their favourite football team.
Wars are often decided on chessboards far removed from the front lines and disguised as great causes. On the scorched ground, those who bear the consequences are the families who carry on, the communities that begin again, and the children who continue to play among the ruins.
Over twenty-five years of working in countries scarred by conflictIraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, North Korea, Palestine, and MyanmarI have witnessed destruction and violence, but also an extraordinary capacity to endure.
This book brings together the stories that rarely make the headlines: fragments of humanity, dignity, and hope that reveal the other side of war, where life always finds a way to endure.
